Introduction: Midnight Reflections in Southern Utah

It's midnight, and I find myself in a hot tub outside in Southern Utah, pondering over a recent journey I embarked on from the beginning of December to February 13th. This was no ordinary journey; it was the 75 Hard challenge, a test of mental toughness and discipline. It demands completion of five specific tasks each day for 75 days without any deviation. Miss a task or cheat, and you're back to day one. It’s a black-and-white commitment: all in, or not at all. While it might sound harsh, there's a lighter version humorously referred to as 75 Soft for those looking for a gentler start.

Embracing Challenges: A Personal Creed

I’ve always been drawn to challenges, seeing them as opportunities for growth aligned with my values. The 75 Hard challenge, despite the intense rhetoric from its creator, fit right into my alley. It's designed for anyone at any time, focusing on physical and mental improvement.

The Daily Tasks:

  1. Reading 10 Pages of Non-Fiction Daily: This task aims at fostering personal development through reading. Physical books are mandatory to prevent distractions and ensure active engagement. Despite my dyslexia, I committed to this, often extending my reading time to model consistency and the importance of reading to my sons. Their growing interest in reading became one of the most rewarding outcomes of this journey.

  2. Drinking a Gallon of Water Daily: Usually manageable, this became challenging during my previous pregnancies and postpartum periods. However, maintaining this habit reinforced the importance of hydration and overcoming physical discomforts, albeit with some humorous mishaps along the way.

  3. Following a Structured Meal Plan: I opted for a plant-based diet with intermittent fasting, even while nursing a newborn. Balancing personal dietary choices with family meals presented challenges, but it taught the value of leading by example without imposing on others. Hosting a family Christmas dinner under these constraints tested my resolve but ultimately reinforced my commitment.

  4. Taking Daily Progress Photos: Initially a daunting task due to body consciousness, this gradually became a tool for witnessing personal transformation, highlighting the subtle yet significant changes that occur over time.

  5. Completing Two 45-Minute Workouts Daily: One of these workouts had to be outdoors, which became particularly challenging during the cold months. Yet, these moments, including an unfortunate fall and battling through pain, underscored the essence of the challenge: pushing beyond comfort zones and embracing resilience.

Beyond the Challenge: Family and Personal Growth

The most profound impact of the 75 Hard challenge has been on my family dynamics. Witnessing their growing interest in healthier habits and personal development has been immensely fulfilling. The challenge also afforded me the opportunity to teach my children about discipline, dedication, and self-care through direct example.

Conclusion: Lessons and Legacy

Completing the 75 Hard challenge was more than just a test of physical and mental fortitude; it was a journey of self-discovery, family bonding, and lifestyle transformation. The experience reinforced the significance of leading by example, especially in the eyes of my children. Our actions resonate far beyond our own lives, shaping the perspectives and habits of those we love most. As I continue on this path of improvement and self-reflection, I remain grateful for the lessons learned and the opportunity to share this journey with others, inspiring a movement towards betterment and understanding that our greatest teachers often come from our own home.
